Description:

Manner of Francisco José de Goya y Lucientes (Spain, 1746–1828), likely originating from the School of Francisco de Goya (Spanish School, late 18th–early 19th century, associated with Spanish Romanticism). Oil on canvas portrait depicting Miguel José de Azanza seated in formal court attire, wearing an embroidered jacket and cravat and holding documents, one inscribed with his name. He is posed in a composed and dignified manner within an interior architectural setting featuring a draped curtain, reflecting the refined court portrait tradition associated with late 18th-century Spanish painting and the influence of Goya and his circle. The sitter’s name, Miguel José de Azanza, is inscribed within the composition on the open book. The painting retains extensive provenance, including partial period labels from Wildenstein Gallery, New York; labels from Chenue Emballeur, 5 Rue de la Terrasse, Paris; and a 1936 Dallas Museum of Fine Arts Centennial Exposition label. No apparent signature. The work is presented in an ornate frame.

Dimensions: 54 X 44 X 3 in.

Condition: Good overall antique condition with typical age-related craquelure, toning, and wear along the edges of the work. Canvas relined.
