Description:

Antique Americana. A handwritten Federalist Era letter bearing the signature of Timothy Pickering (1745-1829), an early American statesman from Massachusetts who served in a variety of important positions, most notably as the third United States Secretary of State under Presidents George Washington and John Adams. He also represented Massachusetts in both houses of Congress as a member of the historic Federalist Party. The letter is dated, from Trenton, September 5, 1797, during the presidency of George Washington. It is addressed to [Messers] Joseph Anthony and Son, likely the Philadelphia silversmith Joseph Anthony, Jr. (1716–1814), with whom Washington dealt while living in Philadelphia, a city that is referenced in the letter. Anthony is mentioned in historic literature in connection with Pickering, George Washington, and John Adams. In a protective plastic sleeve, and presented in the original circa 1964 Sotheby's Parke-Bernet auction gallery folder, with original auction lot information. Good antique condition with age related staining that does nothing to take away from the document or its historic nature. Measures approximately 9 7/8 in. x 7 7/8 in.
